OT: Subsurface IRC-channel swamped by ads

There's not much activity on the IRC channel but would it be possible to
reconsider the policy of joining.

The issue is that for the last couple of days the channel has been hosed
with 'IRC ad service' spam. This means that I get a false notification
of activity, and, because of the volume of spam, it is quite hard to
find whether anything about Subsurface has actually been discussed.

One way to combat this is to use registration (+r mode). Another one
could be to drop the channel altogether.

There is nothing in this world that spammers aren't happy to destroy.

But admittedly, I haven't spent time on IRC in ages. It just doesn't fit my normal workflow. And if I scroll back through the history, it's been a long time that there was any meaningful discussion there.

So I don't know what's the right thing to do.

I posted questions long time ago, and never got a response, which frustrated me. I actually only had 2 times where there were response (both sessions initiated by you)

Not having an IRC might be seen as bad, but having one that is non-responsive is a lot worse, so closing it would
1) not harm anybody (since it is unused)
2) stop frustrating people who post a question
3) be the truth, since it isnt a way to communicate with the project.

For now I've gone with mode +r to see if that helps
